With interest rates about half the rate of inflation, what incentive is there for consumers to save?

Inflation is a sunk cost. You can't do anything about inflation, so you ignore it when making saving decisions. Even if the real interest rate was negative, that doesn't mean it's wrong to save. Again, because you can't do anything about inflation, you have to ignore it.
