Can I claim ESA and and do Permitted Work from day one?

Hi. I can claim ESA, but does that mean I can't work? ESA pays 92 pounds a week, which I can't live off. I could manage an afternoon or two of work to top this up. This would be in line with the Permitted Work scheme. However, can I apply for Permitted Work from day one of the claim? Or must I wait?
