In the first Lord of the Rings film, why doesn't Gandalf travel with Frodo and Sam?

After he tells Frodo to go and meet him at an inn, while he consults the leader of his order, I don't get why Gandalf wouldn't travel with Frodo to Mount Doom. He could protect him and they would get there faster.
