Is the MLM Usana a scam?

My Friend has been riding my about this crap for six mos. I do not want to buy a 50 dollar bottle of vitamins that costs 8.50 at Walmart, and I do not want to go to a hotel conference room meeting where a bunch of used car salesmen types are going to try to talk me into joining a phony vitamin business. Can you give me some info. that I could use to save my friend-ship, and my friend some money?
